How to Prep Your Dog for a Beach Day

A beach day with your dog is one of life's great joys — but it takes a little preparation to make sure it's fun for both of you. Whether you're heading to Sullivan's Island, Folly Beach, or any coastal stretch, here's your complete dog beach day checklist to make the most of it.

Check the Rules First

Not all beaches allow dogs, and those that do often have specific hours or leash requirements. Always check local regulations before you go. Many South Carolina beaches allow dogs during early morning and evening hours — which are actually the best times to go anyway, when it's cooler and less crowded.

Pack the Essentials

  • Fresh water and a collapsible bowl — saltwater is not safe for dogs to drink, and they'll get thirsty fast
  • Dog-safe sunscreen — yes, dogs can get sunburned, especially on their nose and ears
  • A leash — even at off-leash beaches, have one handy
  • Towels — at least two; one for your dog, one for you
  • Poop bags — always, everywhere
  • A shady spot — a beach umbrella or tent to give your dog a break from the sun
  • A bandana — wet it down to help keep your pup cool

Introduce the Ocean Gradually

Not every dog is a natural swimmer. Let your dog approach the water at their own pace — don't force them in. Start at the edge and let the waves come to them. Many dogs who seem hesitant at first become total water dogs once they get comfortable.

Watch for Signs of Overheating

Sand reflects heat and dogs can overheat quickly. Watch for excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy. Take regular breaks in the shade, offer water frequently, and don't push a long beach session on a hot day.

Rinse Off After

Saltwater and sand can irritate your dog's skin and coat. Rinse your dog with fresh water after the beach — pay special attention to their paws, ears, and underbelly. A quick rinse goes a long way toward keeping their coat healthy.

Beach days are one of the best parts of coastal living with a dog. With a little prep, you and your pup can make the most of every trip. And when you're back home, treat them to a cozy rest on a PawCaptain dog bed — they've earned it.
